Applying for a Work Permit in Canada

Purpose: If you have secured a job in Canada, you may be eligible for a work permit. There are two main types of work permits: Open Work Permits and Employer-Specific Work Permits.

Prerequisites:

  1. Job Offer from a Canadian Employer:
    • To apply for a work permit, you need to have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer. Depending on the type of work permit, the employer may need to apply for a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
  2. Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA):
    • An LMIA proves that there is a need for a foreign worker and that no Canadians are available to fill the position. Some employers may not require an LMIA, depending on the type of job or the specific program.
  3. Proof of Qualifications:
    • You will need to provide proof of your work experience, education, and any relevant certifications.

Required Forms:

  • Application for Work Permit Made Outside of Canada (IMM 1295): Form IMM 1295
  • Applying for a Work Permit inside CanadaApplication to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay or Remain in Canada as a Worker (IMM 5710): IMM 5710

Tips for a Strong Application:

  • Ensure your job offer is clear and valid: The job offer must specify the job title, responsibilities, salary, and conditions.
  • Double-check LMIA requirements: If required, ensure your employer has a valid LMIA.
  • Prepare a complete resume: Include all relevant work experience, and make sure it matches the job you’re applying for.
